When you watch the professionals play , they use a balata covered ball which allows them a lot of control. The downside is that these balls have a soft covering. As a beginner you are more likely to mis hit a shot which would destroy one of these balls. You will need a combination of a tough outer covering to cope with your game as well as a ball with a bit of give in it to allow you to play the delicate shots.

Experiment with different makes and hardness , you will soon find one to suit you , then stick with that brand to improve your consistency.
